Inmates have a constant need for basic information and
Officers seem the obvious people to provide it. The requirement
to answer the same questions day in day out can be demoralizing
for Officers. Often they express feelings that they are
glorified babysitters, when they see their jobs as repetitive,
even tedious. With rise in inmate population, Officers
are forced to be more efficient with their time.
For inmates the situation is also frustrating. Inmates
are highly reliant on Officers, so staff spend more time
repeating the same information time and time again. Response
rates to inmate queries are dependent on Officer’s
availability; to manually check through paperwork and
computer entries. Ideally inmates would like immediate
access to information they want without having to rely
on someone else to provide it.
InfoCenter - the answer to inmate’s questions
We have designed a solution, which shifts the responsibility
for answering inmates’ questions from the Officer
to the inmates themselves. InfoCenter is a multi purpose
interactive kiosk from which inmates can directly access
the information they need.
The system releases Officers from a layer of routine
administrative tasks and helps to alleviate constant requests
from inmates. Successful deployment of InfoCenter means
increased administration efficiency and more efficient
use of Officer time. It creates the opportunity for improved
accountability and tracking of inmate requests.
